Chronic pain

Osteoarthritis is one of diseases that causes chronic pain and mainly occurs in about one-third of the elderly who are in over 60-year-old (20% of male, 50% of female). It makes joint damage with various causes, and is accompanied by pain around the joint. As a degenerative disease mainly found on the knee or wrist, it is classified as a chronic pain. It also causes inflammation and edema with water due to the damage of cartilage between bones, and severe pain can disrupt daily life. Opioid analgesic is replaced by NSAID due to the social problem of misuse and abuse, but it is not that effective, so it is necessary to develop a non-opioid analgesic that is safe and effective.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis which is also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease is refractory disease caused by motor neuron selective degeneration over time and makes respiratory problem. Patients should rely on a ventilator and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a very agonizing disease in which most of cases results in death within 5 years of onset. Riluzole is the only way to treat for ALS for now, but it causes various side effects such as headache, vomiting or abdominal pains. Since there is no choice currently, it is necessary to develop other treatments that are safer and effective to reduce patients’ pain experienced and burden on treatment expenses.

Hearing loss

Noise induced hearing loss is caused by multiple causes of genetic and environment factors and is known to be caused mainly by degeneration of inner ear hair cell. According to US statistics, there are about 1,000 patients with noise induced deafness, and about 3,000 people are constantly exposing to noises. The possibility of causing hearing loss seems to be gradually incased. Currently, aging and noise induced hearing loss is cured only by transplanting of artificial cochlear or hearing aid, it gives, however, numerous socio-economic burden. Therefore, it is necessary to develop effective and economic treatments.


All symptoms caused by temporary and abnormal hyperexcitabilities of neurons refer to seizure, and when seizure occurs more than two times despite no special triggering factors we call it epilepsy. Temporal lobe epilepsy that can be mostly found in adults shows seizures in the early stage, but there is a case that accompanies secondary generalized seizure. Currently, there are many anti-epileptic drugs with similar mechanism of action, but there are many patients showing resistance to them. Therefore, it is necessary to develop effective drug with new mechanism.
